Prayer Corner

THE DISCIPLINES OF LISTENING AND ACTION IN PRAYER

Often believers appear to think that prayer has to do mostly with words. They picture “rich” prayer as saying all that needs to be said. Sometimes, however, prayer’s most profound moments come in the spaces between “speeches.” Someone has said that they do their best praying when they “stop” praying. By that they mean sometimes they just need to stop their pious chattering. When we learn such taming of our tongue, prayer becomes not only our talking but also our listening reverently in the presence of God. “The Lord is in His holy Temple,” declared the prophet Habakkuk. “Let all the earth be silent before Him” (Habakkuk 2:20). In the presence of holiness and glory, words pale in significance.

Another discipline of prayer we need to cultivate is action. Does this mean I must be doing something physical like running, working or driving a vehicle while I pray? While we can and sometimes should pray while doing those activities, this is not the type of action we are seeking here. We are here suggesting the “decision making processes” of laying aside our own plans, desire and aspirations to “take up” those we have heard from the Lord. This can be a very action packed time during our conversations in God’s presence.

I have found the “Prayer Labyrinth” or “Prayer Walk” to be a great way of exercising these disciplines of “listening” and “action” while praying. We will be having the opportunity to participate in such an activity here at NFC again in the future. I trust we will be involved in one of the most meaningful ways of developing our prayer relationship with God. WILL WE BE FAITHFUL? -GGG
